Next iPhone to Be Made of ‘LiquidMetal’, Arrive in October

If the latest rumors are true, Apple’s next iPhone will be available in October, according to Gene Munster, analyst for Piper Jaffray.

Munster says the phone will have a redesigned body, and will run on 4G data networks such as LTE.

Munster predicts the phone will be available in October based on a statement made yesterday by Qualcomm, which is currently having trouble meeting customer demand for its radio chips. Those chips would be used by Apple to connect the new iPhone to faster data networks.

Apple released an LTE version of its iPad on both AT&T and Verizon. It seems like almost a given that the company would choose to support the faster data network on its new iPhones as well.

Another report Thursday focused on what materials Apple will be using to build that redesigned body. Computerworld claims Apple will be using an exotic material known as LiquidMetal to create the phone. Apple spent $30 million acquiring the rights to use LiquidMetal in 2010.

Rumors have circulated before that it plans to use the alloy to build a phone, however, recent reports indicate that the company will make good on those rumors with the release of the iPhone 5.

LiquidMetal is a mix of several different metals, allowing the phone to be more durable while giving it a liquid-like exterior feel. Light like plastic but durable like aluminum, LiquidMetal would allow the phone to weigh less and have a thinner profile.

LiquidMetal announced it started shipping its first commercial parts in December of last year. “We are very excited about the use of amorphous alloy technology to deliver stronger, lighter, and more corrosion resistant parts to our customers in varying industries globally.” President and CEO Tom Steipp said in a press release.

“These initial shipments represent a significant milestone in our efforts to provide a new class of materials for our customers to consider when designing complex parts.”

What do you think Apple has planned with the iPhone 5? What features do you hope will be a part of the phone’s design? Would you buy a LiquidMetal phone? Let us know in the comments.

Another Siri-Like App, Voice Answer, Hits The App Store For Those Of Us Without The iPhone 4S

Looks like Apple might be loosening its grip even more on voice recognition apps? Or, it simply just feels that the competition is not as good as its own native Siri. We’ve just gotten word from Netherlands-based developer Sparkling Apps that its voice-response app, Voice Answer — rejected by Apple for the nearly three months — has been approved by Apple and is now live in the App Store, and usable on any iPhone, iPod or iPad running iOS 4.2 or later.

It took “almost three months of negotiating, tweaking and pushing,” developer Martijn van der Spek tells TechCrunch. Like Siri, the app is based on data from Wolfram Alpha, among other sources, and lets users ask questions by either speaking to the app or typing in a question. It’s priced at $3.99.

He says the company is now going “full speed ahead” implementing more features into the app. These include location-based place finding and email/SMS and more voice function commands. Additionally it’s adding in a bit of sci-fi kitsch: it’s planning to create an animated robot for the interface. You can see the video of how that will look below.

The news comes on the back of other voice recognition apps making a splash and then facing rejection issues with Apple, perhaps most notably Evi.

Sparkling Apps in March had a free voice recognition app, Talk to Eve, also rejected for being “too similar to Siri” that was subsequently approved in March.
With the voice-recognition space currently very active right now, the big question is whether any of these third-party developers will be able to gain traction against Apple, and what they will all do next to make themselves relevant and indispensable to users. Offering APIs to other app developers could be one lucrative route.

Create Animated GIF On iPhone and iPad With Jittergram

Even popular apps like Instagram don’t have any option for animated .gif files. I believe there should be a place for them as most of the humor on the internet is presented in animated .gif files. Well now there is a new app called Jittergram which offers a fun and an easy way for even a person who doesn’t know a word about photography to create a small motion picture. Read on for more details.

When you install the app, you’ll find two different settings – two frame or unlimited. All that is required from the user is to keep pressing the Capture button while viewing whatever he/she wants to make the animated .gif of. Jiggergram takes you through a series of images as the Camera app does. The app stiches them together only after each frame has been captured.

After finishing the creation, it can be saved to the photo library. However, there’s a small drawback, you can only view the file as a preview and not anything else unless you tweet it or send it via an email. We know how well the people use smartphones for photographic purposes and iPhone is one of the leading smartphones for the purpose. The app, though unlikely to be a big hit, will be fun to use and can be downloaded from the app store for free. Don’t expect too much from the app, you won’t get a nice interface or a lot of features. It’s a simple app that creates .gif files, and if that’s the purpose, then go for it.

Give it a try if you’re interested. Maybe you’re able to create masterpieces out of it. It works on iPhone, iPad and the iPod Touch.

Download it from here iTunes.

Turn Your iPhone Into A Motion Sensing Game Controller With The Flypad App

While the Apple App Store has a collection of fantastic racing games, the small screen of the iPhone fails to match the thrill and adrenaline of playing the game on a large TV screen. On the other hand, if you play these gaming consoles, they fail to match the iPhone goodness – accelerometer and a gorgeous touchscreen display. Ever wondered if you could get the best of both worlds – play your favorite racing game on a large screen monitor using your iPhone as the game controller. That’s what the Flypad app is all about!

Originated as a YCombinator startup, Flypad turns your iPhone into a motion sensing steering wheel for your favorite PC racing games including Need for Speed, Ignite, Vector Stunt, Nitronic Rush and DiRT 3. There’s a companion Windows app that you need to install on your computer first. Once you do that, install the free Flypad app on your iPhone and you’re good to play your favorite racing games with your iPhone.

The Flypad app offers fully functional steering wheel controls on your iPhone including switch gears (swipe), accelerate (slider), adjust tilt or transmission, apply hand break, change camera and checkpoint reset.

Flypad’s founder Ayo Omojola believes the app creates a differentiated, steering wheel-esque, more immersive experience than the keyboard and his team is looking forward to creating awesome games with everything from tilt control, Wii style control, in-app payments, touch, and gestures. Here’s a picture of DiRT 3 in action using Flypad.

In fact, Flypad scores higher than gaming steering wheels on several fronts. It’s easier to navigate game menus and in some cases, the games themselves seem to be a lot more responsive on the iPhone. The Flypad team has recently released its Flash API to encourage developers to build compliant games and in turn, help expand the range of Flypad compatible games.

Here’s a cool video of Flypad in action.

If you’re an avid racing gamer, you’ve got to check out the Flypad app. It’s too good to resist!

Black SMS: Protect Your iPhone SMS with This App

Black SMS is an iPhone app that keeps your private SMS conversations hidden by covering them in a black shroud until you read them. This will also prevent you from going through the hassle of a passcode unlock every time you wish to use your iOS device, and Apple doesn’t offer anything like this.

The app works with iMessage. You simply install the app and set a password, ant then type out the big secret. After you give the password to the other person for the conversation, you can simply copy and paste the message from Black SMS into iMessage and press send.

The message appearing on the recipient’s phone will just look like a black text bubble. He/she needs to copy the bubble, switch over to the Black SMS app, and paste the message. The recipient also needs to input the same password the sender used to encrypt the message. The secret text will then appear clear as a bright blue day within the app, and those who are trying to sneak in your iMessages app will be app disappointed.

The app is handy for situations where you want to keep things private, but it also draw attention that you’re keeping things private in the first place. Someone close to you might question that why you’re getting blacked out messages in the first place and likely to think there’s something fishy.

It should be noted that it’s not an SMS or iMessage app replacement, and can be used with email or any other encrypted text. It allows users to type text into the app and then have it encrypted, ready for decryption at the other end.

You can grab the app only for $0.99 and download it via this direct iTunes link. I personally feel its providing a great privacy option at a low cost!

PowerSaver: Extend The Battery Life Of Your iPhone

Battery Life is an important aspect of an iOS device. With the launch of iOS 5, many users feel the battery performance of their iDevices has decreased significantly and there have also been claims that the battery life is below par than stated by Apple officially. However, the new Cydia tweak by Akhil Tolani may be a savior for those who use are fed up of their iDevices powering off when they want to use it the most. The tweak is called PowerSaver. Read on for more details.

This new tweaks allows users to carry out pre-defined actions when a particular percent level of the battery is triggered. The usual iOS system shows an on-screen alert when the battery goes down to 20% then 10%. Well, for me this isn’t something that users didn’t know already. What PowerSaver does is that allows certain power processes and system settings to switch off at a certain percentage thereby extending the functionality.

With PowerSaver, many actions are available, such as turning off Wi-Fi, rebooting or respringing the device, turning off the Bluetooth and much more. A great benefit is that it doesn’t require additional battery to function, so it is pretty useful.

The tweak also supports up to fourteen unique alarms. Users can tigger any of them when the battery reaches a certain level. E.g. you can ask the tweak to turn off the Bluetooth when the battery level reaches 20%. If you can get a hold off when to turn off the right functions and how to work out the key levels, there is a high probability that you’ll get a prolonged battery life.

You can get PowerSaver for $1.50 via the BigBoss repository at the Cydia Store. It works with all iOS devices on iOS 4.0+. Leave us a word if you try it!

Activator Update: Launch iPhone App By Connecting/ Disconnecting Earphones

There are many useful tweaks in the Cydia Store and Activator is one of them. It is a breeding ground for other iOS tweaks e.g SwipeBack. So an update to Activator is certainly something ‘big’. It’s compatibility gets an edge when new ‘activations’ are added to it. Recently, i have discovered it is more powerful than before. The wired headset menus have received two new gestures which make it possible to launch any app when you connect/ disconnect earphones from your iDevice.

You have to make sure that the latest version of the Activator is installed to take full benefit from the new functionality. If you have it, head over to the stock Settings app and search for the Activator menu. In the settings, the last section is of the Wired Headset. I’m interested in the last two options as the first two are old. Press on either Connected or Disconnected, and you can choose any app or action which will be launched on plugging in or out the earphone.

Most of these gestures have specific actions listed against them, such as the controls for the stock Music app or the playback of music. This tweak works pretty well, even if the desired action you set is the launch of the third-party apps. Those who own an iDevice and spend most of the day listening to music, are surely going to like this new Activator update. Remember, you need to have the latest version installed for full functionality. You also need a jailbroken iDevice.

ClipboardEdit Tweak: Edit Items On Your Clipboard

It would be right to say that almost every day a developer comes with a new way for using the Notification hub for jailbreak purposes. As soon as the iOS 5 was introduced, it seems that Notification Center based tweaks have taken the spotlight. A new tweak has been released for the Notification Center, by the name ‘ClipboardEdit’, and it has been developed by Ron Melkihor. This tweak allows people to manipulate copied text strings through the Notification Center, on their jailbroken devices. Read all about this useful tweak, after the break!

There are a lot of users who use the iOS copy functionality for copying and pasting data from one place to another. Users also use this functionality for copying URLs in order to read webpages at another time. The ClipboardEdit tweak is useful for such users as it creates a new section in the Notification Center, and the section automatically reads from the clipboard and then displays the text.

Furthermore, when a text has been copied, the user can also go into the Notification Center and edit it anyway they want. After the editing, the article is overwritten over the original content present on the clipboard, and you can then use the edited content for pasting onto another app or send it through e-mail or even a text message, to someone.

One thing which you should keep in mind is that this tweak is only for text-based content, which means that this tweak won’t recognize images when you try to copy them. This tweak won’t add a new Springboard icon or a menu in the stock Settings app. All you’ll get is an option in the NC from where you can enable or disable the tweak. When you enable it, an empty bar will appear in the NC, which will display the text that you have copied.

The ClipboardEdit tweak is a free download and is present in the BigBoss repository.

Let us know what you think about this tweak!

Security Firm Shows How to Crack the iPhone’s Passcode in 10 Minutes

When it comes to the mobile operating system, we give two thumbs up for Apple’s iOS. It’s one of the most secure mobile operating systems ever launched in the market. However, is it really that good?

It’s way better than Android, which is the leading mobile operating system in the market in terms of comparison. Apple vs. Android, the battle is ongoing. The competition is tight. But no matter how much secure Apple makes their iOS; developers will always find loopholes. Somewhere, there has to be a hole and that makes it more challenging for them.

However, it doesn’t stop there. Couple of days ago, a news from Forbes circulated on web pages that there are new security vulnerabilities that could be sold to security agencies for a good sum of money. What’s more, these vulnerabilities can even be used for jailbreak or simply hack your iOS.

That’s how they handle business, and it goes with this new vulnerability shown by a Swedish company on how to hack your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and grab all the information from the devices in just 10 minutes. They use sophisticated in-house software called XRY.

This is how FBI, Local Police department and other secret agencies exploit your device to get all the information they need about your communications even if you have a PASSCODE protected device. Wondering what they can get from your device? The list goes like this: phone call records, messages, SMS/MMS history, locations, key strokes. They can access these in just ten minutes.

I was about to watch the video from the source, but it is not available anymore.

Guys, this is actually alarming. Anyone can grab your phone and access everything even your personal details easily. This vulnerability is beyond Apple’s reach. The security flaw can even work in DFY mode, and it can’t be fixed.

What are your thoughts about these security flaws?

Fusion Jailbreak Tweak for Facebook Integration

Check out this awesome jailbreak tweak! It has Facebook integration similar to the iOS’ built-in Twitter integration. It’s not rocket science. It’s simple to use, and it is also integrated with other social network sites.

The jailbreak tweak is called Fusion. What’s amazing with this tweak is – it integrates Facebook, Foursquare and MySpace into the default Twitter composition pane. Now you can update your status simultaneously. That’s not all. Fusion allows you to compose messages and Twitter updates using Siri.

Just say it, and Siri will do it for you.

You don’t have to learn something new to use Fusion. After installation, it is automatically integrated into the default Twitter composition pane. Enjoy a seamless experience as you type all the way. It works fab.
You can update your Facebook and Foursquare just like sending a tweet if you’re using an iOS 5 device. It’s a tight integration with familiar mechanisms that makes this tweak fun and practical to use.

If you’ve been dreaming of getting native Facebook integrated into your iOS device, Fusion is definitely what you need.

Fusion works fab on iPhone 4S too. With Siri, it will compose the messages for you similarly when you use your default Twitter client on iOS 5. If you want to get Siri running on older devices, Fusion is also bundled with AssistantExtension plugin called Furi. After installation, Furi will compose your tweets for multiple social network sites using only your voice.

It doesn’t stop there. The addition of plugins and support of other social networks are possible. Fusion is virtually unlimited as far as we are concerned, and each network is simply a plugin. With that, any time soon a developer can create additional plugins for more convenience and seamless experience. I think for a $2.00 investment; it’s really worth it.

If you want to check out how it works, Fusion jailbreak tweak can be downloaded from Cydia’s BigBoss Repo.

Camera Grabber: Get iOS 5.1 Lock Screen Camera Shortcut On iOS 5.0.1 Device

Most of you might already know that Apple released the iOS 5.1 just a few weeks ago and with it came a few small changes for the iPhone operating system, though these changes aren’t what one might call as ‘amazing’ or brings something new to the iPhone that might excite the iOS community. The changes present in the new iOS release, are for the camera app for the iPhone. The new tweak makes the camera shortcut on the lock screen function like the iOS 5.1 camera shortcut.

The change present in this tweak is that the new lockscreen camera shortcut has been altered. One of the alterations is that the home button doesn’t need to be double tapped for bringing up the shortcut, and the other alteration is that the camera icon has been moved upwards. This move ensures that the camera icon doesn’t launch accidentally and simply tapping the icon won’t launch the stock Camera App.

Many of you might be waiting for the jailbreak dev teams to tell you that it’s safe to get the update of the iOS 5.1. However, if you still want to experience the new lockscreen camera and not update to the iOS 5.1, then you can do so through the ‘Camera Grabber’.

You can get this tweak from the ModMyi repo of the Cydia store for free and install it on any device running on the iOS 5.0 or the 5.0.1. Keep in mind that no Springboard icon or a configurable menu in the stock Settings app will be added.

After the installation, simply go to the lockscreen and you will see that the screen has transformed. The font will be more compact, and the camera icon will always be there. Hold the camera icon and slide it upwards, to launch the app.

Leave us a word if you’ve tried out this tweak!

VUZIQ: Video Ringtones For Incoming Calls On iOS

Incoming calls are boring! You only get to see the contact’s name with a still photo. But we know all FaceTime capable iOS devices have ringtone capabilities. Wouldn’t it be great if you could set a particular song and a music video to incoming calls that pleases you? Ringtone is usually an audio file that plays to alert when someone is calling. Now we can move around audio and get a video ringtone instead of just a sound with the new Cydia Tweak known as VUZIQ.

When the tweak is installed on a jailbroken iPhone, users are able to search and download music videos. Once downloaded, they are able to set them to play when an incoming call is received. The ringtone of the iDevice is altered to suit the video audio as the tweak makes use of both the video and audio of the downloaded file. After installing the VUZIQ, users will be presented with a new application icon where they can set all the preferences of their choice.

After opening the app, a screen will appear asking for name, age email address and the favorite band to get started. After filling in this info, you can start using the tweak. VUZIQ uses YouTube to search and download the video you would be keeping as your video ringtone. The music video will appear in the video ringtone library once downloaded and saved.

You must make sure to turn it on by using the small switch by the video, or it won’t have a clue how to direct to the calls. The app works with Phone application calls as well as FaceTime calls. After you’ve enabled the video from the app, receiving a FaceTime call or an inbound phone call will yield the video you saved being played for you.

You should note that not all videos on YouTube are open for saving to the public and you need to contact the owner of the account for permission before downloading any copyrighter videos.

You can get VUZIQ from BigBoss repo for free. It has no specific iOS requirements mentioned. Let us know if you try it!

Bars Cydia Tweak: Increase The Accuracy Of iPhone Signal Indicator

Many of us like the iPhone. It’s a device that easily takes care of all the major functions it was made to do, however, like every electronic device, the iPhone isn’t without issues. In order to take care of the issues which the iPhone has, Apple has released a lot of fixes for their device. The fixes that have been released have taken care of the iPhone’s battery life, connectivity problems when using the Wi-Fi and even the signal issues that were reported by many users. However, a problem that a lot of users have complained about is that the iPhone’s signal strength isn’t accurate. There is now a new solution to this issue in the form of the ‘Bars Cydia tweak’, which is said to make the signal indicator more accurate.

Apple released the iOS 4.0.1 in the July of 2010, and this fix was for improving the algorithm in the iPhone used to display the signal bars on the device. The calculations of this fix were erroneous and people saw that the signal strength was far lower than the actual strength.

The Bars Cydia tweak that has been introduced is a tweak that makes the signal strength indicator in the iPhone, more accurate.

So, how does this tweak work?

This tweak displays half bars, rather than rounding the bars to the nearest full bar. This means that if you have signal strength, which is 2.5, then the indicator will show two full bars and one, half bar. This kind of representation is very useful if you live in an area where you don’t get good reception. You can know more about this tweak by watching the video below:

If you are interested in getting the ‘Bars Cydia tweak’, then you can get it through the Big Boss Repo, and you won’t even have to pay for it. You need a jailbroken iPhone with iOS 5 or higher!

Let us know, if you have used this tweak and what you think about it.
